As I Remember My Parents by Mildred Tilley Schenk

The most impressive part of growing up was the examples Father and Mother gave us children in their daily work. You could always find Mother in her flower garden each morning or both Mother and Father weeding the vegetable garden.

Each morning our breakfast was always ready to eat. We never had to wait for it to be prepared. Always we had family prayer to start each day and we ended the day with family prayer.

When we worked in the fields, we always had a break about ten A.M. with a cold drink and food from the house. The meals Mother made were always filling and ready when we wanted to eat. The family usually went through sixteen loaves of bread which Mother made every other day.

When we were asked to do work on the farm, Father was always there to help us complete the job or show us how to do it. We worked hard but always had time to play.

We raised many different kinds of fruit and vegetables which were usually canned by Mother. I remember Father and Mother sitting for days, peeling apples which they dried in the sun. After the crops were harvested, Father would kill a pig and a calf which they cured and canned.

Each summer our family spent one week in the mountains gathering fire wood. Mother cooked and prepared plenty of food for the family while we were gone. The boys, with Father's help, would cut the trees and load the wagons.

Father and Mother were always busy providing all the necessities for their large family. This they did with love and humility.
